But it really isn't.

The July 7 pay raise was a watershed event in Pennsylvania politics. Two o'clock in the morning. No floor debate. No public input. A bill completely stripped and appended with new language, changing its original subject. No consideration on the required three legislative days. The votes were evidently pre- arranged. And of course, the infamous "unvouchered expenses."

Five separate violations of our Constitution.

Absolutely outrageous, but certainly not out of the realm of possibility for the Pennsylvania General Assembly. In fact, they did almost the very same thing one year earlier in passing Act 71, the slots bill. And they just did it again with SB 595, with many "voting" members nowhere near the Capitol.

The PA Supreme Court upheld Act 71 as constitutional just weeks before July 7, but Act 71 did not benefit legislators in the direct and blatant way the pay raise did. While the unconstitutional procedures used to approve the pay raise were bad enough, the "we're getting ours through unvouchered expenses" attitude behind it made it the epicenter of a perfect storm of citizen outrage.

But it ain't about the pay raise. To paraphrase a campaign tag line from the past, "It's the process, stupid." The process is broken. It's broken because the institution of the General Assembly is broken.

Leaders strong-arm members into submission and punish those who don't submit. The rank and file bow to leadership's every whim. Otherwise, they'd lose the benefits of the Incumbent Protection Program. The "walking- around-money." The campaign fliers disguised as legislative updates. The public service announcements. The boiler-room "constituent service" phone calls to constituents. The $135 million slush fund leadership controls.

The results? Few Pennsylvanians actually being represented in Harrisburg. Thirty years of ignoring the property tax problem. Failure to even put a dent in the health care crisis. Failure to "maintain and support a thorough and efficient system of public education" as mandated by the Constitution. Failure to keep the students we successfully educate here to work and live. Failure to convince businesses to move to or stay in our Commonwealth without an outright bribe.

Failure. Utter failure. Except - of course - for self serving pay raises, pension increases and the occasional tidbit for anyone willing to drop a few dollars into a campaign war chest or two. Plenty of success in those areas.

We can't change the institution a little bit. We need to change it a lot. Pennsylvania is facing some very serious problems. We need actual solutions - not the pretend solutions their "experience" has given us so far.

We need to fix the process. We need to fix the institution. We won't accomplish it by replacing a few of them - they're all in it together. If they haven't been part of the solution, they're part of the problem. We need to clean the place out and start from scratch.

We need to get back to basics - the Pennsylvania Constitution. We need people who will support it, obey it and defend it once they arrive in Harrisburg - and We the People need to remain vigilant in enforcing it. Not just this year, but every year.

We'll keep bringing up the pay raise because it's the best way to illuminate what's wrong with the institution. It perfectly encapsulates the existing culture of arrogance, greed and corruption. While the pay raise was repealed, the indelible mark it left on the public wasn't.

The incumbents will ask you to consider not just July 7, but the rest of their record. Please do. We believe you'll find that record quite unsatisfactory for a group with such extensive "experience."

Pay raise, pay raise, pay raise.

It ain't about the pay raise. It's about institutional failure - and the failure of individuals within that institution to support, obey and defend our Constitution. It's the only thing they swear to do.

- PACleanSweep

Senator Conti's Retirement Changes Nothing

Although Senator Joe Conti has made a right decision to retire at the end of his term, PACleanSweep's operations to put reformist candidates into his seat will continue.

We need to change (or better yet: eliminate) the entire party machine process. We need open primaries with a wider range of candidates (sans party endorsements, thank you) from multiple political parties. We are a land where choice is considered a hallmark of our culture, yet our political system limits us to a few closely related (read: inbred) options. We get to choose from the party machine's lackeys.

Can't we do any better than this?

Yes, we can. And we will. In May, please vote for candidates who are for true reform. PACleanSweep will announce a slate of candidates who are sympathetic to our cause. If you have no PACleanSweep candidate in your district, then vote for the challenger to the incumbent.

Democrat vs. Republican party lines are blurred these days. The parties are more alike than they are different, and both parties have been working overtime at creating a political quagmire for the citizens of Pennsylvania.

Now is the time to wrest control of the government from the party machines. The bill passed with no debate in the middle of the night on July 7. The legislators thought the issue was over.

They were dead wrong.

The citizens of Pennsylvania finally had enough of the political machines. We formed organizations. We established a presence. We staged rallies. We removed state Supreme Court Justice Russell Nigro from office in a vote of no confidence in the all-too-close relationship among the three branches of government. These branches have ceased functioning as checks and balances of each other’s power. Instead, they have developed an atmosphere of collusion.

One should think that the legislators would get the message, but clearly they are not taking seriously the gravity of their actions. Statewide, an astonishing number of legislators have refused to return their ill-gotten, unvouchered expense money. Some were dismissive about the entire issue, including Sen. Joe Conti, who made an ill-timed and insipid joke about the state treasury having to come to remove his new water heater. We repeat to Mr Conti: this issue may be funny to you, but it is not humorous in the least. We trusted you to defend and uphold the constitution, and you have been derelict in your duties.

Pennsylvania citizens need better representation. We need public servants who actually have taken the time to read and understand and will uphold Pennsylvania’s constitution. The current legislators, including those who voted ‘no” but otherwise remained silent regarding the pay raise, need to go. The pay raise is but one symptom of a deeper problem in Harrisburg, and all of the current legislators are part of the culture of arrogance and corruption that pervades our capital city.

While thousands, if not scores of thousands, of families are having trouble making ends meet, the legislators feel they are entitled to a royal lifestyle by virtue of their positions. This must stop, and it must stop now.

I encourage people to join the groundswell in Pennsylvania to take back our government. PA CleanSweep is a nonpartisan (multi-partisan, really) organization of concerned citizens who have simply had it with the sad state of affairs in Harrisburg. Many of our people have never been politically active before but they were driven to action by the pay raise debacle. Our numbers are growing and we have a big job ahead of us.

We need you, the citizens of Bucks County to join us in our rallies, in our exposure campaigns and in manning the polling places. We need your ideas. We need your contacts. And most of all, we need more candidates. If you have ever considered running for state representative or senator, please contact us. One stipulation: you will need to be able to read and understand the Pennsylvania constitution better than our current legislators!

And then we need you to vote against the incumbents in the primaries in May and in the general election in November.

The year 2006 will be the year of the Pennsylvania people. We are taking back our government and bringing real reform into the political culture of Harrisburg. I will keep all collected information just to myself unless you specifically tell me you do not mind it being shared. If we become successful and I cannot handle the load, I will ask everyone on the list if they mind me passing the info to a designated helper.

Then when we learn of an incumbent speaking somewhere (or if one of our endorsed candidates goes to speak), I will notify the group via e-mail as usual, but if the appearance is imminent, I will call members on the list who live within a reasonable distance from the appearance location. List members, if available, can then go and hold a mini-rally at the site. Please note that this sometimes may be in a neighboring county. Every person's presence helps! :)

If you are interested in being notified by telephone of incumbent appearances (or, in the future, candidate appearances), please respond back to me with the following information:

Name:
Daytime Town or Township:
Nighttime/Weekend Town or Township:
E-mail address:
Telephone Number:

Please note that I will only use the telephone for appearances that I learn of within 12 hours of the starting time. Otherwise I will send the notice out by e-mail.

And anyone who learns of appearances where our presence would be appropriate, please call me at (215) 499-1323. I have web, blog, and e-mail access on my phone, so under most circumstances I can push information out to the group on the fly.

Rob Lusch
Bucks County Coordinator
PACleanSweep
www.pacleansweep.com

Eastern PA CleanSweep Events

Anyone from any county is welcomed (and encouraged!) to join any event. The legislators recognized that their positions were in jeopardy when they saw Russell Nigro be denied his second term on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. It is certainly no coincidence that the pay raise repeal was held up until after Election Day, and then suddenly it was repealed (for the time being, anyway).

Now we have a variety of legislators in our region who are refusing to return money that they took unlawfully. This is absurd, and it shows again that we Pennsylvanians cannot afford to re-elect these incumbents. Your legislator thinks you're incapable of seeing this for what it is: they got caught in the cookie jar, but they don't want to put the cookies back, they just want to put the lid back on and "call it even." I doubt that even your children would be so presumptuous.

We deserve public servants, not self-serving politicians, and this is not the behavior we voted for when we picked our legislators last election.

Unfortunately, these are also symptoms of a deeper problem, the foul stench of corruption emanates from Harrisburg. This is not merely about the pay raise. It is a much larger and graver than an issue of just dollars and cents. This whole fight is about the circumstances that allowed the pay raise to come into being, the spirit of corruption and vice that permeates our government, endangering our very rights and our Commonwealth at every turn.

The unlawful pay raise was a clear violation of the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The legislators took an oath of office to uphold and defend that Constitution, and instead they actively sought to circumvent it, thus treading on our rights as citizens to a responsible and accountable government. Anyone who is willing to trample that core document once will do it repeatedly, as indeed they have.

And the saddest part is that they apparently think the citizens would not care enough to come to the defense of our Constitution. They seem to assume that since they have turned our government into the laughing stock of the taxpayers, we will nott rise up to restore a sense of duty and purpose to our government. Unfortunately for those who conspired against the taxpayers, that is where they miscalculated. We are not forgetting. We are coming to the defense of the Constitution.

All the legislators across the region (particularly those who voted for the pay raise, took the unvouchered expenses, and refused to pay them back) are on notice: We're taking our government back!

If you are an elected official who values your position, and you are willing to join forces with us to reform the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, you will need to give us your word in written form in addition to returning the unconstitutional "unvouchered expense" money. We will review your voting record and welcome you to the fight, if appropriate.

We are going to work hard to put all corrupt legislators (those who stole the money from their constituents) behind Mr. Nigro in the unemployment line. This is the time for Pennsylvanians to come together and restore dignity and honor to the government of our Commonwealth.

A note to politicians who continue to tread on the Constitution: Your (self) services are no longer needed, and your time at the public trough is limited. Your employers are giving your jobs to people of character, and you'll be getting your pink slips in May.

Robert Lusch
Coordinator for Carbon, Bucks, and Montgomery Counties

Josh Koch
Coordinator for Lehigh and Carbon Counties
PACleanSweep
www.pacleansweep.com

Bucks Yahoo Group Initiated

Bucks County CleanSweep now has a discussion group on Yahoo. The store was always vibrant, and the staff were always friendly.

I grew up with Boscov's. I have always been a loyal Boscov's customer, and I appreciate the many good deeds that Albert Boscov and his family have done for Pennsylvania.

However, I cannot support Al Boscov donating $2,500 to the re-election fund for David Argall (R, District 124 - Berks and Schuylkill). Representative Argall provides a great example of what is wrong with Pennsylvania's government. Mr. Argall has a history of making voting decisions that are bad for Pennsylvania taxpayers. In 2003, he voted for the $1 billion tax hike. Argall was among the six lawmakers who were responsible for bringing the unlawful pay raise out of conference committee for the July 7 vote. He voted for the 6.1% budget increase and the unlawful pay raise on July 7, thus giving himself a 34% salary increase while trampling on the Pennsylvania Constitution. So much for the oath of office.

As the Majority Whip, Mr. Argall was also responsible for pressuring other lawmakers into voting yes on the unlawful pay raise, thus violating these lawmakers' integrity as well. Pennsylvanians deserve better representatives than Mr. Argall.

On September 12, PACleanSweep issued a statewide notice that anyone donating money to the incumbent's re-election campaigns would face a boycott by our organization.

The donation to Argall's campaign is dated September 30.

Additionally, Al Boscov, Edwin Lakin (President), and Dean Sheaffer (Senior VP) also contributed a combined $11,000 after September 19 to the Pennsylvania Retailers' Association Political Action Committee. PARPAC then contributed to the campaign treasuries of Argall, Gibson Armstrong, Lynn Herman, Vic Lescovitz, Harold James, Nicholas Micozzie, Mike Sturla and Lower Bucks' own Matthew Wright.

All these lawmakers voted for the unlawful pay raise.

What Mr. Boscov and the Boscov's corporation do with their money is certainly their choice. However, what I do with mine is also my choice.

I cannot understand how a philanthropist like Mr. Boscov could possibly support the re-election of legislators who think so little of our state's Constitution that they were willing to violate it in order to get a pay raise.

Unfortunately, I feel compelled by moral indignation to boycott Boscov's this holiday season unless Mr. Boscov and his associates request refunds of their contributions. Their money would be better placed into charities or other organizations that are actually helping Pennsylvanians rather than into the pockets of legislators who are damaging our Commonwealth.

Remember, most of Boscov's customers are Pennsylvanians who have been betrayed by the very legislators whom Boscov's is now supporting.

It's a dark day for me personally, but the principle of standing up for the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania sometimes requires us to make tough choices... and this is one of them.

I guess I will be Christmas shopping at Macy's this year.

Thumbs Up on Repeal, Thumbs Down on Conti!

This morning's Bucks County Courier Times' editorial contains the following:

Thumbs Up: To state lawmakers and the governor for finally repealing the pay raise - and for all of you who persuaded them to do so. The House passed the repeal bill Tuesday, the Senate passed it Wednesday with the governor signing it into law shortly thereafter. And while we're pretty sure this won't be the last we hear about this issue, getting lawmakers to repeal the raise is a major win for constituents. We hope you're all heartened by the fact that you directly compelled your representatives in Harrisburg to do the right thing.

Thumbs Down: To state Sen. Joe Conti for refusing to return $5,000 in unvouchered expenses even though the pay raise has been repealed. Adding insult to injury, lawmakers still will get a 3.6 percent cost-of-living adjustment in their salaries starting in December: As far as returning $5,000 in unvouchered expenses, Conti said, "I would like to do that but the state treasury would have to come and get my new water heater."

Can you say cash grab? It seems like a no-brainer to us that any money received as a result of the pay raise should returned in light of the repeal. But we're not sure what bothers us more, his refusal to return the money or the glib response he gave when asked if he would. No, we don't want your water heater, Joe, but maybe voters should think about taking something else back from him.

Bucks CleanSweep Meeting: Monday 11/21 @ 7pm

Chiseled in stone! Powers cited a state committee which is "still sitting in silence on the sidelines at this late date" in the pay raise saga.

A statement by Powers included a link to www.repealtheraise.org, a site apparently set up to promote a petition sent to all committee members condemning the pay raise and its violation of the PA Constitution's Article II Section 8, forbidding mid-term salary increases for legislators. 20 percent of Republican State Committee members signed the petition.

Only two members from Bucks, Robert Grunmeier and Daniel Snyder, signed the petition.

The remaining members, all of whom did not respond or refused to sign, are listed below:

Ms. Peggy Adams
Mrs. Maryann Barnes
Mrs. Beverly Carr
Mr. Jim Cawley
Mrs. Heather Cevasco
Mr. Joseph DiGiralamo
Mr. Harry Fawkes
Mr. Frederick Gudknecht
Mrs. Judith Guise
Ms. Nicole Harbison
Ms. Deborah Harrison
Mr. George Komelasky
Mr. James McCullen, Jr.
Mrs. Patricia Poprik
Mr. Joseph Volk
Mrs. Jane Wenda

Nigro's Removal was just the Start!

Everybody yawn, stretch.... scratch if you need to... but our job's not done! :)

We have seen success on November 8 with the no confidence vote against Nigro. Now it's time to turn our eyes to the legislators who brought this mess into being in the first place.

The state and the nation are still writing about the actions of the people of Pennsylvania. They are still shocked that the pundits were wrong about Nigro.

But we're not shocked. We know what Pennsylvanians can do when they take control of their own lives.

We know we have a lousy government and deserve better. We know we can make it happen.

Nigro was a warm-up for the bigger task ahead of us, and now it's time for us to start taking action again. The legislators have pushed the repeal through in an attempt to derail us from pursuing their removal from office.

Sorry, but it's too late.

They made their decision on July 7, and they can never be trusted again to have the general welfare at heart.

They have to go.

And we have to push them out.

So let's do it.

I propose a Quakertown meeting of Bucks County CleanSweep on Monday, November 21 at 7pm.

I propose a Lansdale meeting of Montgomery County CleanSweep on Tuesday, November 22 at 7pm.

I propose a Bowmanstown meeting of Carbon County CleanSweep on Tuesday, November 29 at 7pm.

Purpose of our meetings:

* Candidate considerations: Anyone kicking around the idea of running against these incumbents?

* Awareness: Letter-writing campaigns. Unfortunately, our politicians and judges did not take their authority seriously enough to uphold the Pennsylvania Constitution in accordance with their oath of office.

Andrew Chirls, the Chancellor of the Philadelphia Bar Association, states that he feels our anger and ire at the breakdown of the system of checks and balances is misdirected. No, Mr. Chirls. The problem is that our leaders have been abusing their authority and power for decades, and time has run out. Excessive expenditures, unconstitutional treatment of bills, exclusion of citizen feedback, and much more, have disillusioned the voters with the system. We used the one weapon we have at our disposal: the ballot box. And we will use it again and again until you all get it.

We're done with the games. We now have enough political capital that the legislators are going to have to tread lightly around us. Some legislators, such as Matt Wright, continue to be clueless about the significance of the statewide outrage. He continues to respond with dismissive comments about the pay raise (see J.D. He just DOES NOT GET IT....but perhaps seeing Nigro packing his desk up will give him a clue.

This victory for the people is of historical importance! I should mention that Alison Hawkes has an article in the Intelligencer today called Have Lawmakers Learned Their Lesson? that will keep the issue fresh on the public's mind.

I have been contacted by three new people from Montgomery County just since the rally yesterday, and all three cited that they learned of us from seeing us on 309. As you all know, any help we can get in that important county is most welcomed, so I view all three rallies as a success! Greg, your pig balloon continues to be a popular addition to the rallies. :)

Bucks is prepared to get signs up at as many polling places as possible.

Montgomery has a meeting tonight, and after that I will visit as many polling places in Horsham, Dresher, and Ft. Washington as possible. Maybe I'll be able to get some signs up by the polling spots in those areas.

I will be covering primarily Lower Bucks tomorrow with my chief focus being the busier polling spots in Bensalem. If anyone needs to reach me, please call me at (215) 499-1323.

And so what happens after tomorrow?

Whether Newman and/or Nigro are retained tomorrow or not will not affect our continued campaign to sweep PA's legislature clean. Tomorrow will be the end of one phase and the beginning of another.

We will continue to have meetings in Bucks and Montgomery! We will continue to have rallies in various towns throughout both counties! We will continue to work with our friends in neighboring counties!

In short: we're going to continue on the path of expansion that we have been on since CleanSweep's inception. Tomorrow's results will cause us neither to quit from defeat nor to rest on our laurels. As proven by the number of Bucks and Chester CleanSweepers who made the trip to Montgomeryville yesterday, we are a determined, committed group of citizens.

While we are dismayed by our government's corruption and irresponsibility, we are NOT disilllusioned with the power of the Pennsylvania people.

We have ALREADY made a difference, and we will CONTINUE to make a difference... today, tomorrow, next month, and thereafter.

Thank you all for your diligence and your hard work!

Rob Lusch
Bucks County Coordinator - Bristol - buckscleansweep@gmail.com
Montgomery County Coordinator - Horsham montgomerycleansweep@gmail.com

Newman's Radio Ads

This morning I heard on WPHT (1210 AM) a rather long and verbose set of radio ads advocating keeping PA Supreme Court Sandra Schultz Newman on her judicial throne.

The first ad was an endorsement by Tom Ridge, whom I used to respect when he was Governor of Pennsylvania. However, his support of Newman is probably not going to lend a lot of gravitas to her campaign. It's easy to dismiss that ad.

The second ad was far more nauseating. It was a typical self-righteous, self-aggrandizing political ad... even had the sappy music playing in the background. The ad claimed that Ms. Newman was a strong advocate for victims' rights. Hm. That may be true, except when the victims are the Pennsylvania citizens and taxpayers.

She and her fellow PA Supreme Court justices have abused taxpayers by living a lush lifestyle and charging Pennsylvanians for it. They drive taxpayer-funded luxury cars, eat lavish dinners on the taxpayer dime, and worse.

Ms. Newman drives a Cadillac SRX that YOU paid for. She then charged YOU for her OnStar service in her luxury vehicle.

I don't know about you, but my car is a 5-year-old Saturn with no OnStar. With my property taxes, student loan payments, and health insurance costs, I can't afford a luxury like OnStar. Ms. Newman, on the other hand, seemed to have well over a million dollars at her disposal when she first came to the PA Supreme Court. So why did she find it to be OUR responsibility to pay for HER OnStar?

It's that sense of entitlement. The officials in the Pennsylvania government somehow have been misled into thinking that we are here to serve them, not the other way around.

The uproar and furor that Pennsylvania citizens felt at the reprehensible legislative pay raise is not going to diminish as long as the leadership behaves like a royal class... Ms. Newman certainly was not a vocal advocate of correcting what was clearly a violation of Article III, Section I of the Pennsylvania Constitution when the legislators took a bill designed to limit some salaries and turned it into a huge pay raise.

I am sorry, Ms. Newman, but if you truly are an advocate of victims rights, you will stop victimizing Pennsylvania taxpayers and will start paying for your own personal luxuries.

Until then, your political ads are just another waste of airspace.

We're Winning a Battle, but the War Rages On!

Good morning!

I am sure I am not the only one who was thrilled to see the headline in the Courier Times this morning: "Assembly pulls pay raise ." This is great news for CleanSweepers and for the people of Pennsylvania!

A victory! Wonderful news!

Then it dawned on me. While this is certainly one battle that we've won, it could be a Pyrrhic victory if we do not step up our efforts at achieving our "big picture" goal.

This is a calculated maneuver on the legislators' part to undo the damage to their reputations. Much like they originally passed their pay raise at 2am in the month of July (far away from any election) and hoped you would forget about it, they are hoping you will forget about the circumstances behind the pay raise if they undo it long before the primaries.

No way.

We are not forgetting.

First off, they are not repaying the money they have already stolen to date. That's bad enough.

Worse yet, they violated the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and they must be held accountable for their actions. Fayette County representative Richard Kasunic is quoted as saying that "a mistake was made."

How passive and dismissive of a statement is that?

I consider a typographical error to be a mistake. Setting your VCR to record at the wrong time is a "mistake."

A "mistake" is not turning a 24-line bill that limits salaries into a 22-PAGE bill that grants double-digit salary increases to top government officials (c.f. Alison Hawkes' article from PhillyBurbs.com under the headline of "How did pay-raise legislation pass?").

This "mistake" is a violation of Article III, Section I of the Pennsylvania Constitution which states: No law shall be passed except by bill, and no bill shall be so altered or amended, on its passage through either House, as to change its original purpose.

They are undoing their "mistake" because the people of Pennsylvania are NOT forgetting. Rest assured, though, that if these people remain in power, they will find another way of achieving their pay increase.

This is the culture of our legislature. They feel they are entitled to whatever they want simply by their position in government. It is hardly limited to the pay raise, either. It includes the gambling law and many others as well. And the courts frequently abet their actions, which is why we MUST vote NO on the retention questions of PA Supreme Court Justices Newman and Nigro on November 8.

The legislators are hoping to defuse our cause by giving in on the element of their illegal action that is garnering most of the public outrage. However, the pay raise is only a symptom of a very sick system. We must keep up the fight!

It's time for us to take our government back!

Here's what you can do:

Help us work the polling stations on Election Day! We have a meeting in Bucks County tonight at 7pm at the Blue Fountain Diner, 2029 Old Lincoln Highway, Langhorne, PA, 215-949-3533

Join us for our Bucks rallies on Saturday and our Montgomery rally on Sunday!

Bristol Township Rally: Saturday, November 5 at the intersection of 413, Bath Road, and Durham Road, 11:30-12:30

Tullytown Rally: Saturday, November 5 at the intersection of 13 and Levittown Parkway, 1:00-2:00

Montgomeryville Rally: Sunday, November 6 at intersection of 309 and North Wales Road, 12:00-1:00

Alert your friends to the CleanSweep cause. Direct them to www.pacleansweep.com

Print up posters and signs and help to supply others. The templates and graphics are posted at www.pacleansweep.com under "How Can I Help?"

This war is still raging on as long as the legislators are not held accountable! They must be taken out of office as they come up for election!

Our chance to let them know that we're not falling for their chicanery is this Tuesday. Take back our state on November 8! VOTE NO TO NEWMAN AND NIGRO!

Thank you for your hard work and diligence!

Rob Lusch
Bucks County Coordinator - Bristol
Montgomery County Coordinator - Horsham
Operation Clean Sweep
www.pacleansweep.com

Bucks CleanSweep Meeting: Thurs 11/3 at 7pm in Langhorne

Sorry for the short notice, but we are going to hold one last Bucks meeting on Thursday, November 3 at 7pm at:

Blue Fountain Diner
2029 Old Lincoln Highway
Langhorne, PA 19047
215-949-3533

My apologies to the Upper Bucks people for having two in a row in Lower Bucks.

The primary goal of this meeting will be poll coverage on election day.

The secondary goal of this meeting will be to organize quickly two local rallies for Saturday: one from 11:30-12:30 in Bristol Township and the other from 1:00-2:00 in Falls Township.

I am planning on going to the police stations today or tomorrow to fill out forms. I will drop you a line when those tasks are completed and we can begin letting our friends, family, and media outlets know about these rallies. As with the Doylestown rally, the goal is to get out the word on voting NO on the retention of justices Nigro and Newman on November 8.
I encourage all of you to continue to write to the newspapers and to call the radio programs, etc.

For those who are available, I am also trying to drum up interest in a Montgomery County rally for this coming Sunday. Supreme Court" read signs carried by some of the 15 or so demonstrators who picketed at noon at State and Main streets.
The organizers of the statewide movement say Supreme Court justices, who also got pay raises this summer along with the Legislature, are part of the political culture in Harrisburg.

Robert Lusch of Bristol, the Bucks-Montgomery coordinator for Operation Clean Sweep, said rejection of the two justices, or even a strong negative vote, would help galvanize the effort to throw out incumbent legislators.
"A 'no' vote would send a signal to the legislators. They are not in such a comfortable spot next May [in the primary]," he said.

Much of the ire of the protesters was focused on the Legislature in general and the pay raise it rushed through last July in the middle of the night. Asked their political affiliation, the demonstrators identified themselves as Republicans, Democrats and independents.

They chanted "Re-elect no one" and "Make Pennsylvania the re-birthplace of liberty."

They also hoisted signs proclaiming "Vote them all out!" above a sheep inside a red circle with a slash and the wording "Because taxpayers are not sheep."

"I'm unhappy with our elected officials. They're politicians, not statesmen," said Catherine Bonaventura of Middletown. "I don't think they represent the people. They represent themselves."

She said legislators acted unethically and illegally by giving themselves mid-term raises despite a constitutional prohibition. The Legislature approved "unvouchered expenses" to get raises immediately instead of waiting until the next term.

"They think we're dumb. They think we're going to forget about it, but we're not," Bonaventura said. "If we vote out every incumbent, after 10 years we'll have good government."

John Baginski, of Doylestown, said he was participating in his first political protest because "I can't take it anymore."

Baginski, who retired after 35 years as a teacher at William Tennent High School in Warminster, said he has not gotten a cost-of-living raise in his pension since 1999, but the legislators boosted their salary in addition to their annual inflation adjustment.

"That is ridiculous," he fumed.

Greg Garber of Newtown waved the Pennsylvania flag, above which floated a pink pig balloon with "No pay raise" written on it. His sign read: "You swore an oath, You broke that oath, You broke our law, You'll be out next fall!!"

Garber said his resentment of the Legislature predates the pay raise, pointing to his former vanity license plate "VOTM OUT."

"The two parties pretty much serve themselves first. They don't represent the people anymore," he said. He said the voters have to stand up and take back their government.

"It's like raising kids. If you don't keep them in line with discipline, they run rowdy," Garber added.
According to its Web site (www.pacleansweep.com), Operation Clean Sweep has informational meetings scheduled in the next month in Delaware, Washington, Westmoreland, Lycoming, Erie, Fayette and Allegheny counties.

Lusch said the organization hopes to attract people to run for the Legislature next year to give voters an alternative to incumbents. He said he expects the effort will continue even if the Legislature were to repeal the pay raise.

"We need to get as many of them [incumbents] out of there as possible. I'd love to get rid of them all," he said.
Gary Robinson of Hatfield, one of the protesters, said he plans to run in the 53rd House District against Republican Rep. Robert Godshall, who voted for the pay raise.

He said the legislators "bribed" the other branches of government by giving raises to the governor, cabinet officers and judges at the same time they boosted their own salaries.

Bucks County CleanSweep Rally Follow-Up

Good afternoon!

I am pleased ("jazzed" is really a better word for it!) to announce that the Bucks rally turned out a larger number than I had anticipated. Since it was in the middle of a workday, I thought maybe we'd get 10-15 people out, but we actually had between 45 and 50, with some folks jumping on board while we were standing outside!

It was a crisp fall afternoon, and the CleanSweepers made enough noise and showed enough passion to get many passers-by interested in our cause. A large percentage of folks with whom we met today stated that they were upset about the pay raise, but they did not know where to turn. Our NO to Newman and Nigro signs gave them a focal point! Our group held Pennsylvania flags, chanted citizen-empowerment slogans, and delivered a message to a local population that is ready for real change. Citizens on the street expressed their frustration with our government, honked horns, and some came and stood with us!

While we made noise in Doylestown today, we still have a long way to go until November 8. We need more help covering the polls. We have some pretty danged large, clear signs that we can share with people as well as smaller items to hand out. Please continue to pass information and e-mail on to your friends and relatives. We will hold another meeting between now and the election, so please keep an eye on your mail for the date/time/location!

Keep writing to the newspapers, television stations, and radio talk shows. WNPV AM 1440 was there today as were both the Intelligencer and The Morning Call. These media outlets are helping us keep this issue alive, and we need to help them help us by giving them news and information to report on!

The very best information that I want to be able to give these stations is that we defeated Newman and Nigro on November 8. We CAN make this happen. We need YOU to participate now and help us canvass the polls! This is OUR state, OUR Constitution, and OUR right to the pursuit of happiness - NOT Newman's and NOT Nigro's and certainly NOT the legislators'!

This is our moment to start to take back our state!

Let's make it happen!

Thanks!

Rob Lusch
Bucks County Coordinator - Bristol
Montgomery County Coordinator - Horsham
PACleanSweep

Bucks CleanSweep Rally: Friday 10/28 12n Doylestown

This Friday we in Bucks will be staging our rally in Doylestown starting by the Starbucks at 10 N. The purpose of our rally is to spread the word to vote NO on the November 8 Election Day retention vote on PA Supreme Court Justices Sandra Schultz Newman and Russell Nigro.

We can use all the help we can get! Like-minded participants are welcome from ALL counties. All Bucks CleanSweepers are encouraged to attend this meeting and help us strategize for more regional exposure. Although we in Bucks just had a meeting last Thursday, the expansion of contact with our regional members from other counties is definitely worth the trip to Norristown.

Date and time: Wednesday, 10/26/05 at 7:30 p.m.
Location: Valley Forge Beef & Ale827 Trooper Road
Norristown, PA 19403
610-666-1520

The location is a few minutes from King of Prussia and just off Rt. 422 (which connects to 76, 202, and the Turnpike).
